Book illustration project

Engaged by Berlinn, a renowned Scottish publisher, I was commissioned to produce a series of book illustrations for the graphic novel Blood and Gold. Written by the acclaimed storyteller Mara Menzies, the novel masterfully weaves elements of African and Scottish folklore into a captivating narrative. With its darker themes and mature storytelling, the book appeals to a wide audience, ranging from young adults to seasoned readers, offering a uniquely compelling modern fairytale.

The project involved the creation of 30 meticulously crafted ink illustrations, including the book cover and 29 interior drawings, all rendered in Indian ink on paper. Each piece was designed to complement the rich, atmospheric tone of the story, enhancing its depth and visual allure.

Scottish National Book Award 2022 winner:
Blood and Gold was later honored as the winner of the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year, further cementing its place as a standout work in contemporary literature.

Blood and Gold is a powerful, dynamic fusion of African and Scottish myth and fantasy which explores the themes of racism, immigration and colonialism, and the acceptance of self, grief and loss. This exceptional and ground-breaking story comes to us from Mara Menzies, a celebrated, prizewinning performer who is much in demand for events and tours throughout the world. Featuring magnificent illustrations from Eri Griffin.
